Concentration

This is a game of focus, memory & quick thinking. It’s a rhythmic challenge that uses various categories to create excellent group fun.

This game is an awesome choice for your indoor group games, parties or even showers. As a great group game, it has the potential to fit just about any occasion! So let’s get the indoor group games rolling.

What You’ll Need: a selection of random categories & participants

How to Play:

Step 1: Gather everyone and form one group circle (participants may be seated or standing). Advise the group that the challenge is to be the last one standing/undefeated.

Step 2: A category will be given and one-by-one (following the direction of the circle) each person will need to name an item associated with the given category but must never repeat what someone else has already said. Example: Say the category was Fruit. The first person might say orange, the next person may say lemon, the following person could say kiwi, etc. Sounds simple enough right? Well here’s the rhythmic challenge.

Step 3: To start the game off, everyone in the circle will create a playful rhythm by simply doing the following: use the palms of both hands to slap their laps for two beats then snap their fingers for two beats. So its, slap-slap, snap-snap, slap-slap, snap-snap, slap-slap, snap-snap, in a continuation which creates a timing rhythm. This rhythm is important because it also acts as a timer. How?

Step 4: Each person only has the time frame of 2 snaps (snap-snap) to give an answer. If they fail to complete their answer before the completion of the snaps then they are out. No one is to speak during the lap slaps as this is short and critical thinking time. So its…

slap-slap
(silence)
snap-snap
(answer)
slap-slap
(silence)
snap-snap
(answer)

Step 5: Each time a person is put out of the game for failure to complete their answer in time, continue the game by picking up with the next person in the circle and a new category of choice (example: cities, carbs, vegetables, celebrities, etc.). Of course, you may continue with the same category if the group really didn’t get very far around the circle with it.

Step 6: Continue around the circle and changing categories until there are just two participants left. Give the final two a new category and have them battle it out until one person slips up. The last person left is the winner of Concentration! This game is a must add to your list of indoor group games.

Catch-Up

Here is a very simple yet fun game. It’s great for indoor group games but may also be used as an outdoor game. This game challenges hand-eye coordination all while incorporating competitive speed. This game makes a great pick for fun indoor games.

What You’ll Need: several ping pong balls, 2 small buckets/baskets, several plastic cups & painters tape

How to Play:

Step 1: Divide the group into 2 teams of 5-10 people per team. Instruct the teams to form 2 parallel lines with Team #1 in one line and Team #2 in the other.

Step 2: Using painters tape, create a boundary line on the floor in front of the first person of each team (best to create a single boundary line by stretching the tape across the first person of both teams).

Step 3: Select one person from each team to be the pitcher. Pull the pitchers from the lines and position them about 10-15 feet across from the boundary line and facing the first person in their team’s line. Create a 2nd boundary line that crosses in front of both pitchers (should be parallel to the 1st boundary line that crosses in front of the teams).

Step 4: Fill 2 buckets or baskets with lots of ping pong balls and give 1 bucket/basket to each of the pitchers. Give 1 plastic cup to each team member that is lined up.

Step 5: At the “go” signal, both pitchers must stand behind their boundary line and bounce a ping pong ball to the first person in their team’s line. The first person in the pitcher’s line must then catch the ping pong ball in their cup while also staying behind their boundary line. In doing so, the ping pong ball MUST bounce once – but only ONCE before being caught in the cup. If the ball is not caught on the 1st bounce then the pitcher must bounce another ping pong ball (to keep the game going, designate someone to collect the runaway balls and return them to the pitcher – perhaps a small child).

Step 6: When the first person in the line catches 1 ping pong ball, that person will then move out of the line and allow the 2nd person in line to try and catch a ball in their cup. The goal of each team is to be the first to get 1 ball caught by everyone in their line. No team is ever secure in a lead as it only takes one miss of a bounced ball to allow the other team a chance to catch up. The first team to clear their line wins Catch-Up!

Variation:

  • Add a level of difficulty to this indoor group game by instructing each team member in the lines to return to the end of the line after they have caught the ball in their cup. Have them add another plastic cup on top of the ball and cup they’re holding creating a small tower. Instruct them to follow the line until they return to the front and attempt to catch another ball in the top cup (one bounce only).
  • The difficulty now is that the 2nd cup is less stable as it sits on top of the ball previous caught. Have each person continue to return to the end of their line until they have stacked as many cups & balls as there are players on their team (5-10). The first team to clear all their lines wins!
