Do My Dance

Family bonding activities have just become a blast. This game calls for adults to introduce their old school dances to the children and the children to introduce their modern-day dances to the adults.

It’s old school vs. new school! Who will win? This fun game is a great pick for family bonding activities as it opens the door to great family conversation both before and after the game. It’s a dance-off that allows adults to share stories of their youth and the children to share their youth with the adults. This game is loads of fun!

What You’ll Need: music, open dance floor, score sheet

How to Play:

Step 1: It’s time for family bonding activities! Create two teams (Team Adults vs.Team Children). Each team will select 3 challenge dances of their choice that must be performed by the opposing team. The first team (determined by a coin toss) will play their music of choice and demonstrate the 3 dances one at a time being sure to clearly state the name of each dance (the demonstration should be about 1-2 minutes long (If you don’t own the particular song of choice it can easily be played aloud via youtube).

Step 2: During this demonstration, the opposing team may either practice the moves being demonstrated or simply observe. When the first team has completed their demonstration of all 3 challenge dances, the second team must do the same immediately after. Each team must remember the moves and the names of the dances demonstrated.

Step 3: When all 6 dances have been demonstrated by both teams it’s time to recall and perform! The team that did the first demonstration will be the first to judge while the other team takes the stage. Using the score sheet or a sheet of paper, the judging team will write the names of the 3 dances they have demonstrated across the top of the paper (horizontally) and the names of each member from the opposing team down the left side (vertically). Each member of the judging team must have their own score sheet.

Step 4: The judging team will play the music and one at a time, call out the name of the dance to be performed until all 3 dances have been performed by the opposing team (dances do not have to be called out in the order they were demonstrated). The opposing team must then recall the dance and perform it as best they can. Judges will rate the performance of each member for each dance on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best).

Step 5: When both teams have completed their performance the scores are added to determine who got the highest score on each team (add the numbers horizontally from left to right to get the overall score for each person). The persons with the highest score from Team Adult and Team Children will then do a face-off which will challenge them to do their best on all 6 challenge dances!

Step 6: As the two persons with the highest score prepare to go head-to-head, the remaining members of both teams merge together and become the final judges. The judges will play the music and one-by-one, call out the name of 6 the dances to be performed. The judges will score each of the two dancers according to the previous scoring method to determine the ultimate Do My Dance winner! This game is a must add to your family bonding activities.

Parent Swop

It’s time to let the children swop places with the parents. What would the children do differently? How well are the parents able to determine what the children would do? Doesn’t seem like family bonding activities? Well, this game gives the children an opportunity to express their thoughts on parental restrictions, implementations & behaviors; and share what they might or might not do differently. Here’s the catch. The child must make-believe they are parenting themselves.

Parents and children will see things through each others eyes making this fun game a win-win for everyone! This is a wonderful choice for family bonding activities. Be sure to allow room for laughter and discussion. Note: This game is best played one child per two parents but can be altered to groups if you feel it better suited.

What You’ll Need: timer, index cards (or a sheet of paper neatly cut into rectangles), pen

How to Play:

Step 1: Start by having the child think of 3 specific rules or behaviors (which we’ll call challenge matters) carried out by the parents. For example, no snacks before dinner, allowance once a month, chore load, curfew, make-up, etc. Then have them consider how they would handle these 3 challenge matters if they were parents parenting themselves – not some make-believe child. Of the 3 challenge matters, there must be two the child would change and one they would not.

Step 2: When the child has decided on the three challenge matters to be presented, he or she is to write all three challenge matters on an index card. The challenge matter that would not be changed should have a check mark next to it to differentiate it from the others. This card should be set aside with the answers face down and used to later confirm the right answers and ensure all is fair when the parents reveal their answers.

Step 3: Using 3 separate index cards, have the child write the same 3 challenge matters on one side (side “A”) of each index card (1 challenge matter per index card). Set the timer to 2-3 minutes and lay the index cards out in front of the parents with side “A” face-up. The parents must then try to determine which two challenge matters the child would change and which one the child would not.

Step 4: Of the two challenge matters the parents believe the child would change, the parents will write the change the child is believed to make on the other side (side “B”) of those two index cards. The one the parents do not think the child would change, the parents will write “no change” on side “B” of that index card. Parents must complete these steps before the timer goes off.

Step 5: When the parents have made a decision on all 3 challenge matters the child will reveal the correct answers. The parents are awarded a 1/2 point for correctly identifying each side “A” challenge matter that would or would not be changed and a 1/2 point for each side “B” correctly notated with the change or no change. Every 1/2 point lost by the parents for no answers or incorrect answers is a 1/2 point gained by the child. The parent (singular) or child with the most points wins! Seems family bonding activities just got interesting.
