The Spoons game is one of the games that are playable using a standard deck of cards. Basically, the game is card-based and does not require unique setups or equipment. This game is best played indoors, with four to eight people.
The game is very easy to play, even kids can watch a game then already understand how it works. The objective is simple, focus on perfect timing, and grab a spoon as fast as you can.
Since this game doesn’t have any special equipment, we can start by gathering all the players in a circle facing each other.
Prepare the standard 52-card deck and the spoons, which should be one less the total number of players. With that said, if there are six players, then prepare five spoons, and so on.
Place the spoons in the middle of the table and form a small circle.
Select who’s going to be the dealer of the group, and he or she should deal four cards to each player.
Once the players are all set, we can now start with the actual game.
The main objective of each player is to make four-of-a-kind of any rank and any value. To do this, the dealer will continually take one card at a time from the top of the deck.
Once the dealer has the card, he or she has the option to accept it or not. If the dealer takes it, he or she would need to choose a different card on hand and pass it to the next person face down – this should be in a clockwise manner. However, if the dealer refuses to take the card, he or she would also need to pass it to the next player face down. A simple way to put this is to make sure that the players only have four cards on hand; if they receive a new card, they need to keep it or pass it – thus, always removing one card on each deal.
Once a player gets a four-of-a-kind, he or she will now have the option to grab a spoon in the middle of the table. This action will be the signal to other players that someone made a four-of-kind, and they should also try to grab a spoon in the middle – with or without a four-of-a-kind.
The person who doesn’t have a spoon gets a letter, starting from letter S until you spell out the word S-P-O-O-N.
If a player spelled the word SPOON, he or she would be out of the game.
Take out one spoon and repeat the process until only one player is left, and is declared the winner.
Players can create more rules for added excitement.
Some players doesn’t spell out the word SPOON to lose a game. Instead, once a person doesn’t grab a spoon, he or she will be instantly out of the game.
Another option could be more of a physical game. Instead of placing the spoons in the middle of the table, you can scatter them all over the room. Once a player made a four-of-a-kind, everyone would need to stand up and rush towards the spoons.
If you’re outside and have a deck of cards, there’s one option to play this game if you don’t have spoons. Instead of using spoons, you can use other things as an alternative to spoons, like, rocks, coins, leaves, or anything easy to grab.
This game is the official game created for Spoons. The mechanics of the game are precisely the same. The only difference with this product is it comes with a convenient plastic storage and travel case. It has the same 52-card deck and five spoons included. This item is perfect for outings and parties, instead of using actual spoons, this would be a better choice.
